Daily minimum temperatures encountered by Scott's and Lieutenant Evans's parties in 1912, compared to modern observations at the South Pole, at 83.13ºS (weather station 5), and at 79.9ºS (weather station 4). Temperatures experienced by Lieutenant Evans's party were close to normal throughout their return journey. Amundsen's returning party experienced normal conditions similar to these. While Scott's party encountered normal conditions for about the first 55 days of 1912, this period was followed by more than three weeks during which daily minimum temperatures were exceptionally cold - about 10-20ºF colder than what can now be shown to be normal on the Barrier.
